Wet & Cold In Rapid City

Needless to say it has been an 'interesting' week here in Rapid City.  The weather has been cold, windy and raining most days and is supposed to be this way all this coming week as well.  In fact, this afternoon and tomorrow the predictions are for 'severe thunderstorms' so we'll see what happens.

We have been to this area a couple of times in the past and have done Mt Rushmore, Custer State Park, Badlands, Wall Drug, the town of Sturgis and Deadwood so we might do some 'repeats' if the weather permits, but the main purpose of our visit was to look at a new car (since this is our legal state of residence and the sales tax is less here) and some other social security business, plus we like this area.

Our mail forwarding service, Americas Mailbox,  is based out of here and they have a small
campground on the premise so we are parked here.  Unfortunately, with all this rain there is a lot of mud around and Murphy loves all the mud so I have done a lot of cleaning each time he/we go in and out.  Oh well.......it's only mud right? When you arrive here and check in, they say 'welcome home' as this is 'home' for many full timers, construction workers, traveling nurses, or anyone who travels and needs to get their mail.  There are several of these services throughout S. Dakota but we are very happy we chose this particular one as we have had very little trouble with our mail, they also take care of licensing vehicles, voter registration and and anything else you might need while on the road.  Of course, all for a fee, but we expect that.

Wednesday turned out to have a non-rain afternoon so we headed out to the one Ford dealer here in Rapid City to look at a Ford Edge.  We had narrowed our choice down from previous car shopping, and wanted to wait to purchase until we arrived here.  An Edge can be towed four wheels down and that is what we wanted.  Apparently, business has been very good the last few weeks (weather permitting the sales lady told us) and they only had two Edge's in stock that we were interested in.....a black and a white one.  We drove the white one and it has everything we wanted so we sat down to see what they could do for us.  They gave us several thousand more for the Honda than we expected and would have even let us keep the Honda for another week until we could get the braking system removed, so we went away with a new car.  In fact, if we wouldn't have taken the white one, there was a couple at another salesman's desk that were waiting to see what we would do because they wanted it too.  According to Penny, our sales gal, they had 7 or 8 Edge's just last week and now they were down to two.   I would say that while we were at this dealer for several hours, all the sales people were busy and at least 3-4 vehicles were sold that afternoon.  Business is good I'd say for Ford.   Thursday we went back for a two hour orientation on the navigation system (oh my gosh.....for this non-techy gal, this is going to be interesting).  Dick is already familiar with GPS systems from driving the motorhome but I've never learned so this will be my time.  We agreed to let them have the Honda in order to 'prep' it for sale and then they will meet us this week at the place that will remove the braking system and once that's done it will be ready for them to sell.

I would say the new car is our news for the week.  We finished our Social Security business too and have tried some good restaurants in the area so life is good.  We are planning to leave here next Monday if we can get the licensing done on the car later this week and head to Pender, NE to get the towing equipment installed on the new car.  In the meantime, we will see what the weather does and how it affects some sightseeing before we leave.

Our thoughts and prayers have been with the folks in Moore, OK this past week and now with the terrible flooding in parts of TX.  Mother Nature has shown us a pretty unusual spring so far I'd say.

As we all celebrate with barbecues and family gatherings this Memorial Weekend, let us remember the real reason for the holiday and that 'all gave some........but some gave all'.  God Bless!

Hello from A Windy and Cold Rapid City, SD

Before I start this blog, let me send out our thoughts and prayers to the first responders in Phoenix.  They had a very bad weekend having lost both a firefighter and a policeman in separate incidents.  Both were young men with families and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those two brave men.    Rest in Peace!!

And we just saw on TV a tornado has touched down today in OK City.....special thoughts and prayers to the folks in that part of the country.  Stay safe....

We had an enjoyable weekend in Westminster, CO although getting to visit with Dick's friend from his working days didn't pan out.  Wayne did something to his hip/back and was barely able to get out of bed and ended up in the ER so we just 'did our own thing' on Friday night and Saturday, then left on Sunday.  Weather was beautiful while there so we drove around the area, and had a wonderful dinner at Saltgrass Steakhouse.

Sunday morning we hooked up and left a beautiful warm morning in Westminster and headed towards Gillette, WY.  The weather changed in WY to rain and wind although nothing serious when we had quit for the day at about 3 p.m.  There aren't many RV parks in Gillette so we opted to stay in the Kmart/WalMart parking lot (unusual to me to see both in the same parking lot).  By an hour later it was really windy and raining heavily and getting colder by the hour.  It was going to be a longgg night.  We always check at the stores to make sure it's ok to overnight in their parking lot, and most times it is, as was the case there and we were glad we were off the road.  Dick fired up the generator and we had a little dinner, watched some TV and called it a night.  This morning there were several other RVs and semis there who had joined us which is what the lady at KMart told me would happen.

The temperature was 49 this morning as we left Gillette and made our way across I90 towards Rapid City.  We had rain and wind all the way but just as we exited here in Rapid the wind picked up and I could hardly get in and out of the RV and it is COLD!!!!   We are set up here at the campground and are 'rockin' and rollin' as Dick calls it with this wind.  Even Murphy doesn't want to go outside!!!  The rain has stopped but the temp is 50 and I swear the wind is blowing close to that which makes it seem even colder.  It is supposed to be this way most of the week so I don't think we'll be doing too much sightseeing.  We have already dropped our bikes off to 'Cranky Jeffs' in downtown Rapid for service.  We bought them there 2 years ago, and he's giving us a 'free' service check on them.  Love the name of that shop and he's such a nice guy and a pleasure to do business with.

There is sure a lot of wide open space in WY and we did see several trains loaded with coal so the couple of mines we passed en route to Gillette, we presume were mining coal.  I'll attach a picture or two taken as Dick was driving and it was raining so not the best pictures.

As I sign off, I will say this is a special day in our lives as it was one year ago today that Dick went to the hospital and they said he'd suffered several strokes.  Wow.......time flies and he's doing great and for that we're grateful.  Enjoy today......we don't know what tomorrow will bring!

Wide open spaces of WY

Hard to see but from road but appeared to be where they were mining coal.
The trucks look so little going up and down into the mine

Finally We Leave Paradise....

We have been anxiously awaiting our departure date of 5/1/13 from Paradise RV Park in Sun City, AZ.  We've made some good friends while there, and will no doubtedly return, but we just need to see some different scenery after almost 18 months there.  We will always be grateful that we weren't on the road somewhere when Dick had his strokes on May 19, 2012 but he's doing very well now and we're very anxious to get back to seeing this great country of ours.  It was a valuable lesson last May and we will no longer take things for granted.

I will try to publish this blog once a week, probably on Sundays, so if you would like to follow along that would be great.  It won't be a fancy blog, and is done mostly for our use in keeping track of people and places we see along the way.

We will spend our first two weeks in Cottonwood, AZ about 80 miles north of Phoenix (tough travel day....LOL!) We are members of Thousand Trails and have some 'free' nights each year so will use some of those to do some housekeeping chores in cooler weather than Phoenix.  We like the little town of Cottonwood as it has some interesting history, some good restaurants, and it is close to Sedona and Flagstaff.  Unfortunately, internet service at the park is a notch above terrible so I won't post anything until after we leave there on 5/15.

Update.......5/16/13

We left Wednesday morning (5/15) as planned.  We had a very nice two weeks there where the weather was almost perfect and we accomplished all of our housekeeping chores......grout tile cleaned, leather furniture cleaned & conditioned, wood oiled, cabinets organized, and Dick's outside projects also accomplished such as washing & waxing the rig, cleaning up the car and many more.  We got some 'R&R' in too with a day in Flagstaff to see the granddaughters and daughter-in-law who was home for a visit, a trip to two to Sedona, a nice visit with a friend we met in Rapid City, SD in 2011 as he was passing through Cottonwood on his way north ultimately to Alaska and some good food as well.  Trip Advisor hasn't steered us wrong very much and the same was true in Cottonwood for good 'eats'.

Wednesday night we stayed at a Travel Center (truck stop) outside Grants, NM.  It was just a pull in for the night and out this morning so even though we checked a couple of Casino RV Parks in that area, we opted for sleeping amongst the trucks....LOL!

Thursday we made our way through Albuquerque and Raton, NM before hitting the CO line.  We got an early start and just kept going so ended up for the night in Fountain, CO at a KOA.  They aren't our usual RV Park (too expensive) but it was convenient and decided to splurge for tonight.

Murphy is enjoying the change of scenery and all the new and different 'smells'.  He's feeling much better and we hope that continues.

We'll be in Westminster, CO for a couple of nights starting tomorrow.

Catch back up with you on Sunday..........
